Building an Intel C2750 1U Network Server

Building an Intel Avoton C2750 or Atom C2758 1U Server with dual HDD and addtional NIC expansion through the PCIe x8 slot.

Introduction

Hacom has a 1U server case with built-in Flex-ATX PSU here. We have a limited number of custom I/O shields.  For mini-ITX systemboards that we don't normally stock, we provide an aluminum Universal I/O Shield which can be cut to accomodate I/O ports in the back panel. We will demonstrate how to build a 1U server with any mini-ITX systemboards. The ASRock C2750D4I was illustrated since the Intel Atom C2750 is a well-known high performance network processor. Since the 1U server case has two (2) mounting spaces for 2.5" laptop hard drives. a dual system can be setup for a Raid 1 Disk Mirror to provide some confidences in high availability and fault tolerant. A NAS (Network Attached Storage) system like FreeNAS or OpenMediaVault (OMV) should be buitt on a Raid 1 Disk Mirror system

The ASRock C2750D4I has one (1) PCIe 2.0 x8 expansion, which can accomodate high performance NIC cards, including quad-port Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet cards or other high-performance PCIe x8/x4 network cards.

The Supermicro A1SRi-2758F Motherboard is another option with the Intel Atom C2758 and Intel® QuickAssist Technology providing additional performance for applications that use security and compression acceleration.

Building 1U Server C2750D4I

The following illustrated the process of installing a mini-ITX motherboard, specifically the ASRock C2750D4I. Since we don't have a custom I/O shield for the C2750D4I, we will use the Universal I/O shield instead.

The aluminum Universal I/O shield can be cut easily to accomodate the I/O ports at the back of the systemboard.  It allows better air-flow for convection cooling.

1U Server with Dual HDDs

The ASRock C2750D4I has twelve (12) SATA ports. The 1U server case can mount two (2) 2.5inch laptop hard drives on the expansion side. Using both hard drives, we can build a RAID 1 Disk Mirror system with some confidence of high availability and fault-tolerant. The following picture show the two (2) installed 2.5inch laptop hard drives.

A Raid 1 Disk Mirror should be set up using the Marvel Raid ROM. A NAS (Network Attached Storage) system like FreeNAS or OpenMediaVault (OMV) should be buitt on a Raid 1 Disk Mirror system.

Expansion via PCI Express

The ASRock C2750D4I has a PCIs 2.0 x8 expansion slot. On the right side of the back-panel, a PCIe card can be installed with either a righ-angle PCIe x8 riser card or a flexible PCIe x8 riser cable.

In the following, we will add four (4) more Gigabit Ethernet for a total of six (6) LAN ports. We use the quad-port i350-T4 Gigabit Ethernet NIC card connected to the motherboard with a flexible PCI Express x8 riser cable.

Following are other network options which can be expanded through the PCIe x8 slot, including 10 Gigabit Ethernet:

  1. Hex-Port 6 x Intel Gigabit Ethernet
  2. Dual-Port Intel X540-DA2/X710-DA2 10 Gigabit Ethernet SPF+
  3. Quad-port Intel X710-DA4 10 Gigabit Ethernet SPF+
  4. Hex-Port 6 x Intel 10GbE DA SPF+

Change from Rackmount to Desktop

The following describes the procedure to change the 1U rackmount server to a desktop type.

  1. The rack ears on the 1U server can be removed and replaced with the two brackets from the accessory bag, as shown in the picture.
  2. There are also four (4) rubber feet included in the accessory bag. They need to be placed at the four corners at the bottom of the server.

The 1U server is then changed from a rackmount system to a desktop one.

Notes on the Configuration of Options

  1. There are some hidden options, which depend on other options. For example, the Memory option won't show up until the Systemboard option has been selected with a motherboard.
  2. If you want the OS that is not listed in the Software option, please contact support@hacom.net and we will try our best to accommodate.  Most Linux distributions like Arch Linux, Mint, OpenSuse can be easily installed as well as some of the BSD-like OSes.
  3. If you order a dual HDD system with software installation and would like a Raid 1 Disk Mirror system, please contact support@hacom.net to request the configuration.
  4. It will take 5-10 business days to ship a complete server build because we don't normally stock the ASRock C2750D4I motherboard. There will be additional delays on the Supermicro system dues to its use of the ECC memory.
  5. Supermicro A1SRi-2758F Motherboard is also available as an option of the systemboard.
    • The Asrock C2750D4I has better CPU performance, but only two (2) built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports, while the Supermicro A1SAi-2758F has four (4) built-in Gigabit Ethernet. However, the Supermicro uses the Intel i354 Ethernet controller which may have driver issues and incompatibility with older OSes.
    • An Intel C2758 1U Server Firewall can be configured with the Supermicro A1SRi-2758F Motherboard, four (4) Gigabbit Ethernet ports, 8GB RAM memory, 1TB hard drive and installed pfSense® software for about $975!
